This Christmas & holiday season for my family has been quite different than all other years. For us it's usually a time when our family all gets together, celebrates Christmas and then we all go away on holiday together and have a great time - like a lot of families. But this time was different. 2012 was going to be my brothers last Christmas - it wasn't said, but we all knew it...whether we wanted to admit it or not.

The alarm went off, the morning had arrived, it was the day of the Kapiti Woman’s Triathlon.  I’d like to tell you that I felt well prepared after hours of training. But let’s be serious here. Yesterday I paid a visit to Rattle Ya Dags for some inspiration and it was good value and something I needed to hear.  I recently came down with a horrible head cold. 6:40am – Alarm sounds.  Really?  Surely not? Today I woke feeling a little ill… perhaps it’s the fair portion of sea water I swollowed last night at the Kapiti Woman’s Tri practice swim… That was a toughie and to be fair I hadn’t really prepared myself in more ways than one. The count down is on – 11 days till Christmas!  The shops are busy the car parks full.  People hustle and bustle in an attempt to get Christmas shopping out of the way.  In the busyness of it all how about taking a minute to A) stop and BREATHE! And B) consider giving an amazing gift to a total stranger this year. This week on the Kapiti Coast we’re all (well those of us between the ages of 16 and 60yrs) being offered the opportunity to give an amazing gift!

Well what a day! I’ve dragged myself away from the mountain of washing still to be hung, the car that needs cleaning and the hen house that needs clearing out for today’s blog.  What a bizarre weekend of weather and yet today we’re drowned in sunshine. Jamie Oliver’s cookbook has been kind to my belly but not my fitness over the winter months. The spring growth is blooming to assure me warmer weather is on the way, and with that comes a sense that I ought to get back outside, to try and regain the fitness I’ve lost over the past few months of relative inactivity. For 15 years we’ve been encouraged every year to ensure we’re getting our 5+ A Day of fruit and vegetables.  This years is no different and November is this years 5+ A Day Fruit and Vegetable Month! The recommendation of 5 or more servings of fruit and vege a day is in line with the NZ Ministry of Health guidelines and one we should all be thinking about when serving up breakfast, lunch and tea.
